Art 1 Final Portfolio

1. Which project was your favorite or most successful this semester? Please explain cartoon skeleton

My favorite project was the cartoon skeleton drawings that we did on the first couple days of this semester. This was my favorite because it wasn't a huge project and it was really easy to do. I thought it was really creative to make a skeleton of a cartoon character. The easy part was that it was just monochrome, so I didn't need to use color for the skeleton which would be harder. I thought this was successful for the first days I was in Art because I didn't really do much with art before. I also tried to ad a little value to the eyes because I wanted the skull to look hollow like a real one. I liked this one the most out of all of my projects because it was simple and the idea was creative. It was only difficult when I had to figure out the skeleton of a bird because Tweety isn't shaped like a real bird. Besides that I was happy with my drawing.

2.    Regardless of whether you liked or disliked a project, which one did you learn, grow, or developed the most from? Please explain. octopus printmaking

I grew the most from the octopus print making project. I liked it at first but when we had to cut the print out it was confusing and hard which stressed me out. I learned a lot through this project though because I didn't ask a lot of questions in the beginning of the project which could've helped me understand what we had to do. I mostly just went along with the project until we had to cut it out and thats when I realized what we were supposed to be doing. I saw some people doing ombre tints to paint their print but I had already printed it so it was too late. I think I should've used a different hue instead of the purple with the plain background. The color contrast would look better if it was complementary colors like blue and orange. I think I learned from this one a lot because before I had problems with the color and understanding but now I grew and I know what to do next time.

3.    Choose 1 piece of Art that you used skills and techniques learned from previous projects. Discuss your growth as an artist and how you incorporated these skills and techniques to create the piece.  self portrait

One piece of art that I used techniques on was my self portrait. That was really hard to do because I constantly had to look at the mirror and see where the light was on my face even if I was in a different setting. I grew as an artist from this drawing because before that I didn't think every curve, line, and shade mattered or made a difference in the drawings. Afterwards when I looked at my drawing and didn't see myself I wanted to erase the whole thing and start all over. The values on this drawing are still a little off but based on what I did with the early drawings of my shoes and hands, I think this is much better. The skills and techniques I used from other projects for this one was the shoes, hands, skeleton, and practicing the eyes. I didn't need to worry about color for this one because it is monochrome so I mainly focused on the shading. I didn't really think a lot about the shape but I did measure my actual face and eyes to match with the drawing.

4.    Which project do you feel was the least important in learning the concepts taught in this course? Please explain. canvas painting

The least important artwork that we did this whole semester for me was probably the canvas painting because I don't really see what I did that helped me understand the unit. Our unit was on the colour wheel and my painting had only tints of red. I really should've found a photo of a rainbow or something more colorful instead of pink flowers on a pink background. These colors are analogous colors because they are all colors related to pink. I just thought this was least important due to the fact it was also at the end of the semester so I don't know how I can grow from this one. I didn't learn how to grow from this painting which makes it the least important of all my projects. I still liked doing this one though even though it didn't blend together all that well. Also the texture of the flowers and blurry background was hard to do, the painting mainly looks harsh and has clear edges.
5.    Choose a piece or artwork where the subject matter reflects you as an artist. One that you have a personal connection to. Please explain your choice.  spray paint
My spray painting project is the most reflective of myself through this semester because it was the most fun for me to do. I didn't want the paint to be a photo of myself so I chose my close friend Dani to do a wierd pose. This reflects me as an artist because it connects to me due to the person in the painting. Unlike my other paintings and projects it could look like it was made from someone else but this goes straight to me. These are also colors that I liked and they are sort of analogous colors. I wanted the spray paint to be a distinct expression so I asked my friend to do that. We used shade and color for this project, also you can see there is an underlying yellow below the deep navy. I originally did yellow spray paint but it didn't look good so I changed it to navy. I thought that it would look messy but I actually like the yellow underneath.
